Welcoming Our New Ambassador: Stephen Akinsanya

We are delighted to announce that Stephen Akinsanya has joined Spark2Life as our new ambassador. With over 32 years of experience as a criminal barrister, Stephen brings both professional expertise and a deep personal commitment to supporting young people at risk of crime and violence.

Born in Bristol to a Nigerian father and Trinidadian mother, Stephen grew up in Thornton Heath, Croydon. Inspired at the age of 12 by the courtroom drama Crown Court, he set his sights on becoming a barrister – a dream he pursued despite racism from peers and limited expectations from teachers. His determination paid off, and today he is a long-standing member of 15 New Bridge Street Chambers in London.

Alongside his legal career, Stephen has dedicated decades to youth work. Beginning as a Sunday school teacher over 20 years ago, he quickly developed a passion for engaging overlooked young people, building trust and mutual respect through open dialogue. That passion has only deepened through his work in the courtroom, where he has represented countless young people – some as young as 12 – facing serious charges, including murder and drug offences.

Stephen’s experiences have given him a unique perspective on the life-altering impact of decisions made in youth. He is a strong advocate for early intervention, mentorship, and positive opportunities, believing firmly that “every young person has a gift waiting to be unearthed.” His message to young people is clear: choices such as carrying a knife can close doors, derail futures, and affect not just one life but entire communities.

At Spark2Life, Stephen’s values and experience align powerfully with our mission. We are excited to walk this journey with him, amplifying young voices, unlocking potential, and shaping safer, stronger futures.
