The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day was ‘Give To Gain’, focusing on the power of generosity and support. The support our mentors offer is often rooted in their own lived experience and helps them in uplifting young women. We know that creating safe spaces and trusted relationships is necessary for young people to feel empowered and supported, especially for young women, who face unique challenges.
This year, we were grateful to be a part of our local MP, Stella Creasy’s International Women’s Day Festival at Soho Theatre, Walthamstow. Our mentor, Fatmah and our Youth Advisory Board member, Kellesse spoke at the event about issues young women face in our community.
Fatmah said:
“Speaking today highlighted the resilience of women from all walks of life and the potential of young women. It was inspiring to be part of conversations that uplifted voices, shared stories, and highlighted the importance of community support in empowering young women to reach their full potential. The festival really opened my eyes to the importance and impact women can have.”
We asked Fatmah what kind of specialist support she provides in her role: “I can provide specialised person-centred support through mentorship, advocacy, and creating a safe environment where young women feel comfortable expressing themselves.”
It’s important for organisations like ours to ensure we are empowering young women as they can easily slip through the cracks of support. Fatmah said: “Providing tailored support for young women is necessary because their experiences, challenges, and aspirations often differ from those of their male counterparts. By recognising and addressing these unique needs, we foster confidence, resilience, and personal growth. Bespoke support helps to dismantle societal barriers and stereotypes, enabling young women to navigate challenges effectively and achieve their goals.”
Our staff are the heart of what we do. Ensuring our staff feel empowered in their roles strengthens their support for young people and has a bigger impact on their lives. “Seeing their growth, resilience, and achievements strengthens my belief in their potential. Being able to serve as a role model, provide guidance, and advocate for their needs gives me a deep sense of purpose and fulfilment”
We know that collaboration is key to gaining more equality, so thank you Stella Creasy MP for including our voice in the IWD Festival and for campaigning for equality in our community and beyond. Thank you also to Mums Who Build for including us in your conversation about empowering young women.
